New Delhi, October 01, 2017: “We welcome the initiative of ‘Saubhagya – Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana’ which aims at providing last mile electricity connectivity to all rural and urban households. Nearly 67% of India’s population of 1.3 billion live in the rural areas, many of whom still do not have access to electricity. Electricity transforms people’s lives and spurs them towards a better future. It is a vital cog towards enabling education, jobs, better healthcare facilities and lighting up homes. In addition, it allows people to improve their lifestyle through usage of electricity aided machines. Electricity should not be a privilege but a right for all Indians.
This move will take India a step closer to becoming a super power nation and will impact several industries including the appliance industry. The hugely untapped rural markets have exponential potential. The electrification project will help increase the penetration of appliances in these markets which at the moment is very low and thereby add comfort and reduce drudgery from people’s lives all over the country. It will also have a multiplier effect by freeing up time, enabling more women to join the workforce and thus will drive up income and demand. This project if implemented well thus has the promise to change India forever.
