New Delhi, April 25, 2018: The Indian Green Building Congress (IGBC) registered over 3,800 green buildings across the country. Formed in the year 2001, IGBC is a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The council aims to enable a sustainable built environment for all. Besides, it also aims to make India a global leader in sustainable built environment by 2025.
Among the 1,124 green buildings registered with IGBC, Maharashtra made significant contribution and ranked first in the list of Indian states. With its contribution, the registered green building footprint of India reached 3.86 billion square feet, which is the second best after the US.
Green building refers to those projects that preserve most of the natural environment while serving the purpose. The construction of these buildings does not disrupt the land, water, resources and energy in the surroundings. The need of green buildings has risen due the increasing exploitation of the natural resources across the globe.
The highest contribution of Maharashtra is an outcome of several adequate measures that the realtors have been taking. They have been sincerely implementing the same in all their residential and commercial projects.
Mumbai-based K Raheja Corp, led by Chandru Raheja is one such real estate company, which received a Gold rating from IGBC for one of its residential abodes. Raheja Vistas’s Building No. 39. was awarded a total of 48 points under the IGBC Green Homes Rating Programme.

The IGBC green building rating system involves several categories, on the basis of which a project is determined. These include site selection and planning, materials, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process as defined by IGBC. It has three different levels of green building certification, which are Gold, Silver and Platinum.
Mumbai-based Tata power, India’s largest integrated power company, also received a gold rating from IGBC for its Corporate Centre, Carnac building in Mumbai. The company has always prioritized the conservation of resource. Founded by Dorabji Tata, the firm is a subsidiary of Tata Group.
Tata Power has been at the forefront in driving numerous sustainability initiatives. By achieving the required green building standards, the Carnac Building has achieved the IGBC Gold rating under the “Indian Green Building Council’s Green Existing Buildings”.
Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd became another company to achieve India’s first Platinum Pre-Certificate rating for its project, Mahindra Splendour in Mumbai. The award was presented under the IGBC Green Homes rating system.
The leading green building movement in India, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) released a report that gave a state-wise presentation of the registered green buildings. According to that, Maharashtra was followed by Tamil Nadu (355), Karnataka (354), Uttar Pradesh (351), Telangana (253), Delhi (197) and Haryana (194).
India has achieved a total of 4.85 billion square feet of green building foot-print. The country has managed reduction in carbon dioxide by 50 Million Tons. Moreover, it has also ensured water savings to 170 Giga Litres and energy saving worth 50,000 Giga Watt/Hours.
Setting up an ambitious target, IGBC aims to facilitate 10 billion sq ft of registered green building footprint by 2022. In order to realize its target, the council has taken full responsibility to facilitate building a Greener & Healthier India. It has enabled the country to script new milestones in sustainable constructing.
