K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce launches ‘Capacity Building Programs on Environment Management

New Delhi, September 03, 2016: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region – Environment Improvement Society (MMR-EIS) has entered into an MoU with K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, to jointly develop and run ‘Capacity Building Programs on Environment Management’ with the objective of developing capabilities of local authorities, NGO’s, and other stakeholders in the areas of environmental protection, improvement and monitoring.

With its expertise and experience in Environmental Sciences, K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, will develop and coordinate capacity building programs that will combine understanding the science, economics and policies forurban environment management through discussions ,field visits, group activities and case studies for application of best practices with experts across the country.

Says Municipal Commissioner,Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, Ajoy Mehta, “With Mumbai developing at a fast pace, the need for sustainable methods to design our infrastructure, administer and manage the various environment challenges confronting the city, requires specialized knowledge, involvement of various agencies, functionaries and experts. A planned and interactive program for capacity development will go long way in enabling a strategic approach to making Mumbai a green city. This initiative will also help the Municipal Corporations around Mumbai”.

Says Principal Vijay Joshi,“Government officials, NGO’s and other stakeholders are working hard to address issues of increasing pressures on resources, environmental degradation, air pollution, water management, sanitation and solid waste management. capacity building of people who are responsible for updating their knowledge for addressing these challenges is an absolute necessity. We are proud to partner with MMR- EIS for developing and conducting a program for local government officials and community members seeking to address today’s complex environmental challenges at the local level. We believe that it is time for academicians to participate in the development of our city – and what better way than this”.

The program will be conducted in five modules of 40 hours each over one academic year from June to April. A diploma will be jointly awarded by MMR EIS and KJSSC to participants who successfully complete all five modules. Participants will be given participation certificate for attending individual modules. Diploma applicants have to submit written assignments at the end of each course. They are also required to submit a complete a research project at the end of all five course to be eligible for the diploma.
