Chennai, April 14, 2018: The much delayed elevated expressway project from Chennai harbour to Maduravoyal was all set to get a fresh lease of life.
Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Chennai Port Trust Chairman P Ravindran said the construction works would start by the end of this year and the project would soon become a reality.
The feasibility study for the elevated expressway has been encouraging following which they have requested the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take up the construction works at the earliest, he added.
Once the project was completed, it would help ease traffic congestion near the port, he said.
About the performance of the port, he said it handled a cargo volume of 51.88 million metric tonnes for the financial year 2017-18, a marginal increase when compared to last year.
Despite a sluggish growth in global trade, It was a matter of pride that the Port handled 51.88 million metric tonnes as against 50.21 million metric tonnes of cargo during 2016-17.
He said the Port also handled 15,49,457 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) during the year 2017-18 when compared to 14,94,831 TEUs during the corresponding period last year.
